Anniversary

Posted in life, deeds, dates by caleb on January 25th, 2007

One year ago, today, I loaded the last of my old life into a moving truck and my Honda Civic, said good-bye to my father, kissed my mother, and drove away from home. I remember Mom weeping and Dad standing alone in the driveway in my rear-view mirror like it was only yesterday. Sometimes, when it’s late at night, I turn up the heater and roll down the windows and remember what it was like to be cold and alone under the stars and God as I covered the miles and the country in the winter of oh-six. God has always been Good; I’ve just never known it as much as I have in the past year.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him, all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host.
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

Juicing and the Federal Vision

“It sounds like whoever wrote that (to wit, me) holds to a pretty robust view of the internal/external distinction, which view, if it got any more robust, the Evangelical Theological Society would have tested for steroids.”

The best content-management-and-blogging platform, Wordpress, just got better. If you’re already self-hosting your own website, why wouldn’t you make the switch? Did I mention cross-posting?

In marginally-related news, I was quite amused yesterday when I discovered the Elephants Gerald T-shirt boutique while walking around the Ballard Sunday Market.

I Stink At Buses

Posted in life, deeds by caleb on January 19th, 2007

My plan this morning was to ride the bus to work. There’s a route that runs from my neighborhood right onto campus, so I got up early, ran through the shower, got dressed, grabbed my jacket, and headed out into the rain to do my part to save the environment. I arrived at the bus stop way earlier than I needed to, and there was no shelter, so I stood in the rain for about fifteen minutes. At 8:27, the MT 245 rolled up, and I took a few steps back to let the driver know that I Was Waiting For MT 265.

Except that MT 265 never came. Ten minutes later, I realized that MT 245 was supposed to be my bus after all, so I walked home, slumped into my gas-guzzling Honda Civic, and drove to work by myself.

Photos: Windstorm Aftermath

Posted in art, life, deeds by caleb on January 15th, 2007

Journalist Okay, this is the last post about the windstorm, I promise. I got up the morning after the storm, and there was no electricity. Worse than that, however, was that we had no hot water, because there was no hot water heater — it had been removed during some plumbing work earlier that week, and someone had forgotten to replace it. So I figured that I’d go up to the ProClub and shower there.

The drive, which normally takes about ten minutes, turned into a half-hour ordeal as I realized what a blessing traffic signals actually are. I arrived at the ProClub, where very nice employees greeted me at the parking lot, apologized because they weren’t open, offered me hot coffee and a pastry (strange for an athletic club…), and told me that the Seattle location still had power and water and that I could head over there if I was interested. The 520 bridge across Lake Washington was still closed, so I opted to go by the girls’ house instead. Laura had still had electricity when we talked the night before; perhaps they’d survived the carnage.

Then I hit the worst of it. NE 40th Street runs east-west along the north edge of campus and across 520, and it’s a sluggish thoroughfare on the best of mornings. Without the aid of stop lights to regulate the flow of traffic, however, it was positively glacial. It took at least 45 minutes to cover the quarter mile from 156th NE to the main part of campus, where things lightened up considerably. I think that the problem was about ten thousand employees not getting the memo that we were Not Open.

I finally made it to Laura’s house about an hour and a half after I left mine, but they were without as well. C’est la vie. We had a good time walking around and looking at the fallen trees and fighting the huddled masses at Fred Meyer, while trying to prepare for the Christmas party that evening. :)

Photos: Power outtage at 20CF

Posted in art, deeds, dates by caleb on January 14th, 2007

Whoa The big windstorm hit on the evening of December 14th, which happened to be a Thursday and the night when we usually have our 20CF Bible study meetings. As the winds picked up, the rain-soaked ground gave way and trees began to fall, knocking out power to blocks and neighborhoods in rapid succession. We were in the middle of making spaghetti on an electric stovetop when Dave’s house lost power, so we finished up on his propane grill outside, read some Malachi and Luke, and headed home. I had my camera with me and shot a few photos.
