Tuition

Posted in undergrad by caleb on August 30th, 2004

I found this amusing:

The balance due to the university is one dollar

I dropped a class and added a new one, and this was the difference. I’m going to take great satisfaction in walking up to the cashier at the Pavillion and throwing down a one-dollar bill — or even better, I’ll make this year’s payment in pennies! Maybe I should ask about getting on the installment plan :P

Lofty Plans

Posted in undergrad by caleb on August 29th, 2004

After wrestling with it for several days, Dimitri came over last night and helped me build my loft. Mad props wouldn’t be sufficient for a good deed of this magnitude, so I’ll give him this rabid coconut shell from a Monty Python sketch and a furious pink umbrella leftover from a high school production of My Fair Lady. Since Mary, John and Jason also donated screws and other assorted hardware, they each get their choice of annoyed-looking leis from a Survivor reunion special.

Skittlebrau

Posted in undergrad by caleb on August 27th, 2004

Back when I was interviewing for RA positions last semester I had the privilege of interviewing at Hart Hall. During the interview, a wise man told me that from the outside looking in, it seems like the RA position is all beer and skittles, but if I were hired, I would soon discover that it was a lot of beer and not so many skittles. I now understand exactly what he meant (the position is satisfying, but the duties that you have to carry out aren’t always the most enjoyable); however, I’m still puzzled by his peculiar use of metaphors. :P

New Photos: Origami and Pixelblocks

Posted in site news by caleb on August 27th, 2004

I added two new albums to the photo gallery in case anyone was interested. One is a few things that I’ve made with paper, the other is a few things that I’ve made with pixelblocks. The rest of this entry can be disregarded. This is me testing Textile2’s image floating feature. This is a bunch of filler text so that I can see how text flows. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Fusce iaculis turpis in urna. Proin faucibus tincidunt arcu. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Sed facilisis dolor eget nisl. Pellentesque erat massa, faucibus ac, sodales eget, luctus nec, ante. Pellentesque scelerisque augue id risus. Nunc pellentesque, urna at eleifend scelerisque, pede quam imperdiet diam, ut semper urna sem at wisi. Ut placerat, tellus egestas pulvinar tincidunt, sapien mauris vulputate erat, a volutpat risus libero ac nunc. Ut tristique consectetuer nisl. Suspendisse placerat pretium !

Errata

Posted in undergrad by caleb on August 26th, 2004

Just a bit of clarification on that earlier entry: my comment about never getting married or having children wasn’t a veiled invitation for random people to IM me to suggest friends, supermodels or cartoon characters as potential life-partners. Thanks and gig ‘em.

I live!

Posted in undergrad by caleb on August 26th, 2004

It took a bit longer than I expected to get set up and running again, thanks in part to TAMUScan, DHCP servers on the fritz, Windows XP SP2’s firewall defaults, RA training, financial aid snafus, my own laziness, and freshmen. I’m not exactly sure how freshmen contributed to the down-time, but Sean and I agreed today that freshmen get away with far too much, so I’m doing my part to stick it to ‘em.

Alay came to town this evening because he’s interviewing for A&M’s medical school tomorrow, so we got the chance to hang out tonight, to reminisce about good times now past, and to catch up on how everyone is doing. It’s bizarre to me that I now have friends and peers that are engaged and married — it’s no longer “Brad, that guy who graduated a few years ago” or “Marcella’s older brother” but rather “my friends Erick and Joy” (not to each other, FYI). Between that and realizing that I have 4 years up on some of these incoming freshmen, it’s enough to make you feel old. Not much left for me to look forward to but social security benefits, my $1.99 senior specials at Denny’s, and maybe a few other trifles like getting married and producing offspring of my own. (Heh, riiight — at the pace I’m going, those last two will never arrive :P)

On a somewhat different note, I finished a 30-unit Sonobé Kusudama while I was on check-in duty today. It’s not really worth noting, except that I think that it’s the first one that I’ve ever actually finished. I must have started 50 of these over the years but never got around to actually completing one. I made two unsuccessful attempts at having no two faces of the same color touching, but I finally gave up and just finished it off. I’d post a photo, but my camera is now in Jacob’s care, somewhere between Houston and Paris. If you read this, Jacob, good luck at Eurographics!

I think that’s enough of an update for now. I have a busy day of pizza-tasting, loft-building, and abstract-writing ahead of me!

Monkeying Around

Posted in random, thoughts by caleb on August 13th, 2004

They say good things come to those who wait, and it’s true; I bought this banana at lunch yesterday, I waited until now to eat it, and it’s good.
